Agreement between UPA and Government of Quebec

AGREEMENT BETWEEN UPA AND GOVERNMENT OF QUEBEC – THE FÉDÉRATION DES CLUBS DE MOTONEIGISTES DU QUÉBEC (FCMQ) AND ITS MEMBERS ARE RELIEVED.

Montreal – February 3rd, 2017 - The Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec (FCMQ) was following the conflict between the Union des Producteurs Agricoles (UPA) and the government of Quebec very closely. The Premier of Quebec is set to announce this afternoon that an agreement has been reached between the two parties. The FCMQ is satisfied with the collaboration displayed by both parties as it, not being a party to the negotiations, had been placed in a very delicate position throughout the conflict.

The FCMQ is beholden to agricultural producers for the integrity, interconnectedness and sustainability of our trail network, while also to the government of Quebec for the financing of its operations and activities, this via the rebate collected from snowmobile registrations fees and redistributed to the Federation and member clubs through financial aid programs.

Mrs Denise Grenier, President of the FCMQ : “We are extremely content that the conflict between the parties has been resolved in a negotiated settlement that is acceptable to both sides.  We will be able to reassure our members that they will be able enjoy our trails with peace of mind.”

Snowmobiling in Quebec generates more than $3.3 billion in annual economic activity, along with more than 14,000 jobs. “Numerous hotels and outfitters were receiving cancellations as a result of the pending threat of a blockade of snowmobile trails.  We hope that this positive news will encourage snowmobilers to plan tours and rides once again”, adds Mrs. Grenier.

Agricultural producers are important and essential partners who voluntarily and freely provide access to snowmobile club volunteers so that they may maintain trails on their property and thereby permit snowmobilers to travel on their land. The FCMQ is extremely grateful for their contribution for without their willingness to support regional economic development the interconnected provincial trail network could not exist.

Thank you to all of you, volunteers, landowners, as well as all the various bodies and government ministries which have participated and contributed to this wonderful adventure for the past forty-two years.  With numerous weeks left to enjoy another wonderful snowmobiling season, our superb trail network awaits you, fellow snowmobiling friends!
